Did you know that even though a biological father of a couple that are not legally married at the birth of their child and the biological father is listed on the birth certificate, the father still may not have legal rights as it relates to the child. The father needs to file a petition for paternity with the Court and obtain a final judgment of paternity. Said final judgment should contain language that the biological father is the legal father of the minor child. Said court order should also contain other language giving the father certain rights as it relates to the minor child. This is a brief summary of this area of law.
