GEM - Gateways to Excellence through Mentorship- is a program designed to help young female students start bridging the gap between student life and professional life by pairing them up with a mentor that will help them network within their business and professional world. 

50 young women were handpicked by the Dean of the School of Business to participate in the program, which prepares them by providing networking and resume building workshops.  They are then assigned a mentor – a high achieving professional women that is active in the business community.  The role of the mentor is to invite their GEM to be their “shadow” at two business events and/or functions and help her network by making introductions that will open doors for her in the future.  The role of the GEM is to implement what she has learned at the various workshops and walk through those “opened doors”, using her real life contacts to further her career opportunities. 

Currently, 29 of the GEMS are still in need of a mentor.  On March 4th the University of Miami School of Business will be hosting a “Meet Your Mentor” networking event to match the remaining 29 GEMS with a mentor.  I know that giving back to the community is important to you and I know that you do a lot of networking, and that makes you the perfect mentor.  To participate, all you have to do is get paired up with a GEM and then invite her to go with you to at least two events.  It can be anything, and because it’s an event that is already on your schedule, it won’t take up any extra time.  It’s non-intrusive and you would be making a huge difference in the life of a GEM.
