On September 29th, the Women’s Chamber of Commerce hosted our first Equal Rights Amendment Education Panel at the Storer Auditorium at the University of Miami School of Business. This exciting event was moderated by WLRN correspondent Tom Hudson and included as panelists: former Representative J.C. Planas, League of Women Voter’s President Maribel Balbin, Barry University Professor Leah Blumenfeld, Representative Lori Berman, and FIU Professor Ali Bustamante.
The event discussed the history and challenges faced by the ERA, statistics and issues regarding the gender pay gap, and what strategies and ideas could help promote the status of women in the work-place and in politics. As members of the business community, the issue of the ERA has a direct impact on many issues we face in the workplace, including pay, benefits, maternity leave, promotions, and harassment.
The overwhelming positive feedback of the event will no doubt inspire the Chamber to pursue similar events in the future to address the issue of gender in business and beyond.
